As a serial killer that portends to be an artist, he kills people to study their anatomy…To make a more accurate, perfect puppet. One that was first made of inanimate objects, then carved to look more humane, and as his process evolved, one that took humans as materials and transcended them as well.
Hoping to socialize the reclusive boy, Chiyo invites Sasori to attend the official inauguration of the child-king into the office of Third Kazekage. The Third greets the two honored guests with cool politeness; Sasori is impressed by the stern way he carries himself, and how he garners the respect of the crowds who roar their approval. Sasori is tired of his other peers looking down on him literally because of his age. Out of his ire, he makes Karasu, and takes joy in scaring them off.
Kankuro should wonder what - or whom - his prized puppet is made of…. They say that peacetime will end, soon, and Sasori worries. He is comfortable now, in his little copper-soaked home that Granny never visits. That he has no clue what is going on in the shadows of the Hidden Leaf and Rock Villages is even more discomforting.
Not knowing makes him anxious. He begins toying with the idea of a spy network. Suna leaps at the chance to attack the Leaf while it is preoccupied with fighting in the Land of Grass. Petitioning to lead the Puppet Brigade, Sasori tells the Counsel that he wants to find the man that killed his parents. The Counsel is convinced of his sob story; Chiyo at unease; the Third silent. Shortly before Sasori goes off to war, Chiyo pays him a visit, and is horrified at the sight of an unknown corpse strung up over the rafters; blood draining into a makeshift sewer.
Sasori nonchalantly greets her, blood on his face, asking if she would like any tea. Her face goes white. Sasori watches her go from the doorway, jaw clenched. It was not the first time his granny had left him to his own devices his own despair , but it would certainly be the last. This is not the year that Sasori leaves the Hidden Sand; rather, it is the year that Chiyo goes into self-exile.
This is what happens when you wait, He hastily concludes. He takes out his frustration on the enemy forces. Where once there is armies, now nothing remains. No bodies, no scrolls… nothing but the fields upon fields of red, barren sand. He is held to be a loyal, if unsettling, Suna shinobi. A hero. Some poke fun at the eccentric man, and do not make any attempts to approach. They are beneath him, anyway.
Or so he claims. Under the cold black curtain of the desert sky, the loneliness festers. A sleepless Sasori examines the turn of the stars above him, ever-clear in the vastness of the desert. They are a constant reminder of the eternal, for which Sasori is grateful. He thinks them as companions, in a distant sort of way. One night, the Third Kazekage comes to Sasori, maps in hand and near dizzy with his own sleeplessness.
Now would be the time to strike - but not the place, Sasori decides, ever-aware of the circle of tents around them. He leans his face against his hand and observes the approach of his leader, a placid smirk painted on the grooves of his lips. They speak first of battle strategies. Then, they gloss over the subject of those waiting for them at home. Then, art. The Third has a hobby of carving gods from stone, while Sasori wryly comments that he likes to carve humans into wood.
The Third chuckles at that. Sasori smiles. Sasori, the Third, and several other high ranking officers return to Suna in a show of good will, leaving negotiations in the hands of capable diplomats.
They attend several celebratory speeches and parades, Sasori always lingering in the shadows. He watches bitterly as families are reunited - crying mothers embracing sons, fathers lifting up their baby girls as if they are flowers. He returns home, a war hero, and unrolls the scroll with his favorite marionettes. Dozens of puppets appear before him in a flash of smoke, face frozen gentle, eyes wide and scared.
Wooden fingers card through his fiery hair. Sasori mentally catalogues his entire collection nearly sixty total , and decides that the spoils of war are not enough. Sasori is given leave by the Third, and travels in the Land of Winds, searching for something that will make him feel less empty.
Isolated with his thoughts, his mood worsens, and is only improved by the occasional visit to a small village. He people watches, searching for the perfect souvenir to take home.
Sometimes he forgets that he needs to eat. It is only when his hand is over the chopping block for stealing that he remembers —. It is simple enough to affix his arm to that of a puppet—just like Komushi.
It is less simple to fight off the ensuing infection, which takes him through the weeks in a daze of fevers. The rumbling voice of the Third comforts him through his nightmares, and scares away his granny.
When Chiyo attempted to cheer him up by teaching him puppetry, Sasori's innate aptitude for the art became apparent, and he even began to devise masterful ways of eliminating a puppet master's weaknesses in battle. His skills even allowed him to create two puppets in the image of his parents in an attempt to discard the terrible loneliness he felt.
However, as the puppets were unable to give him the real parental love that he desired, Sasori lost interest in them, and they later fell into Chiyo's possession. During the Third Shinobi World War, the effectiveness of his puppets in spilling enemies' blood on the sand gave rise to Sasori's moniker "Sasori of the Red Sand". However, motivated by his desire to make works that last forever, Sasori began experimenting to create puppets out of people.
In the anime, his only friend, Komushi, lost his right arm during his border control duty, so Sasori gave him a new puppet arm as a prosthetic limb.
After Komushi perished, having accidentally ingested some of Sasori's poison, Sasori proceeded to turn him into one of his first human puppets.
Over ten years before his own death, Sasori secretly kidnapped theThird Kazekage and made him into one of his human puppets. Sasori was paired with Orochimaru, who shared his desire of an everlasting existence.
After Orochimaru left the Akatsuki following his failed attempt to takeItachi Uchiha's body, Sasori bore a grudge towards his former partner and sent Kabuto Yakushi to be his spy in Otogakure. Nevertheless, Sasori was unaware that Kabuto was working for Orochimaru long before he posed as an Akatsuki spy, with him and the rest of the Akatsuki made to think that Kabuto joined Orochimaru's side after being dispelled of Sasori's brainwashing.
In the anime, Sasori later learned of Orochimaru's whereabouts and joined Deidara to find him. Orochimaru, however, surprised Sasori by countering with areincarnation of the actual Kazekage. The two missing-nin then pitted their respective pawns against each other, with the Third Kazekage proving stronger than the puppet. However, the Kazekage soon regained control of himself and forced a release of the technique, prompting Orochimaru to retreat.
Deidara then unleashed a series of bombs on Orochimaru's hideout, hoping to kill the Konoha-nin. Sasori was left very annoyed that despite a thorough search, they couldn't find a body. Sasori grew up in a sad and lonely environment due to the absence of parental love.
When introduced to the art of puppetryby his grandmother, Chiyo, he grew a little happier. He eventually created puppets in the likeness of his parents, but when he realised that the puppets couldn't give him the actual love that he desired, he became cold and aloof. He eventually created puppets in the likeness of his parents, but when he realised that the puppets couldn't give him the actual love that he desired, he became cold and aloof.
This led to his maintaining little regard for human life. Sasori even went so far as to state that he would feel nothing if Chiyo died, as he claimed that his heart had become like his puppet body: without any emotions.
Neither did Sasori had any loyalty for his village, as he defected to pursue personal interests and even kidnapped the Third Kazekage, the latter act causing severe consequences for Sunagakure, and then attacking the village again twenty years after leaving.
Despite his cruel and nihilistic nature, Sasori was also known to possess a very down-to-earth outlook on life, rarely getting worked up over obstacles that impeded his way. He rarely gave way to any strong emotions, and such instances that happened were often short-lived.
Sasori was also known for his impatience, as he repeatedly noted that he did not wish to wait or keep others waiting. Sasori and his second partner in Akatsuki, Deidara, both had conflicting views on art, and they frequently argued about their differing perspectives. Deidara maintained his belief that art was something transient that departs quickly, where as Sasori believed that fine art was everlasting and remained far into the future.
This reflected their individual natures; Deidara made clay sculptures which exploded, while Sasori created long-lasting puppets out of humans that never died. Nevertheless, although Deidara outwardly seemed to respect Sasori's beliefs, Sasori never respected Deidara's.
