Selection Sunday is nearly here, setting in stone — for the most part — which teams will make the NCAA Tournament. While there are a few sure bets, other teams will need to rely on strong finishes or even win their conference tournament to make it into the final field.
The NCAA selection show will have a lot to unpack: not only what teams make it in, but also seeding, which is itself a fascinating and occasionally controversial part of the process.

Selection Sunday will take place on Sunday, March 14; the bracket reveal is scheduled to air at 6 p. ET, but the full team bracket — which includes First Four teams — won't be unveiled until the conclusion of the last conference tournament. It will be the first time since that the selection show occurs; the NCAA elected not to create brackets for the tournament in after its cancellation due to the COVID pandemic.
The team NCAA Tournament will be made up of 31 automatic qualifiers — teams that win their respective conference championships — and 37 at-large bids. The committee has no formula to seeds teams, but there will be a notable difference in it brackets contestants this year than in previous seasons: The S-curve — a method of ranking each of the 68 initial teams in a snaking pattern — will be the only method to determine what teams are placed in what region.
