When the editor of this book received the Clever Hans manuscript, I would love to know what thought process led them to believe that Mike Lowery was the right man to illustrate it. Kid Spy series. This is why I am not an editor.
I would have missed this golden opportunity to pair Lowery with this truly fun text. For his part, the man finds humor where he can, and in this book he decided to lean way way into its German setting. Both artists cultivate a deep respect for their nonfiction material while also luring in the kid readers with fun graphics. For the mystery lovers, a true tale that lays out the clues, the detectives, and the surprising solution.
And for lovers of science, this is a superb recounting of how people learn more about the natural world around them and build upon that knowledge. Without this particular horse, some scientists would be less effective at their jobs. The older I get, the more remarkable I find the people, individuals, and yes animals that single-handedly change the course of history.
He really was clever to have such a lasting impact on history! She has served on Newbery, written for Horn Book, and has done other lovely little things that she'd love to tell you about but that she's sure you'd find more interesting to hear of in person. Repetitive, and mind Clever Hans is a story I expected to continue on with the similar themes of similar stories by the Brothers Grimm, such as Clever Elsie.

They are very short, as one would know, so I have decided to read each one and give them a review. Some of them are well known fairy-tales and some have never been told. Some are fairy-tales we know but are not the same because they have been downplayed for the children. Hans is stupid. Gretel and Hans are not brother and sister in this story.

Instead Gretel is some kind of friend and Hans is a very dumb boy. Gretel gives Hans all these gifts with him never giving anything in return. Then she gives him herself, he leads her to the stables, and treats her like a calf.
His mother said he should have given her eyes meaning a giving himself to her in return. I really had to feel sorry for Gretel but she honestly deserves better than that oaf.
May 27, Caroline rated it it was ok. Not much of a fan of the setup of this, but children might find the pattern funny. Hans is pretty selfish isn't he, he never gives, only wants to take.
Also as an autistic person, I wonder if he is too, as he takes his mother's advice exactly as she says especially that last one! This story isn't enjoyable at all. One thing I learn from reading Grimm's story collection is that if the story has "Clever" on the title it will turn out to be a story about an incredibly doltish character.
